HS-6 is suitable for cartridges including 9mm Luger, .38 Super, .40 S&W and 10mm Auto. It is also used in shotshell applications, where Hodgdon lists HS-6 for heavy field loads in 28, 20, 12 and 10 gauge.
The spherical powder design gives HS-6 consistent metering characteristics, making it a versatile choice for handloaders looking for a reliable pistol powder and shotshell powder. Hodgdon HS-6 was also marketed as identical to Winchester 540, a discontinued powder.
